She lived most of her astonishingly long life in Manhattan, but she and her husband (fellow artist William Meyerowitz) frequently summered in the fishing village of Gloucester, Massachusetts, where this work was painted. Bernstein wrote in a letter: “I painted this subject several times just before the end of WWI. The affair was for the benefit of the wounded veterans.” Best known for portrayals of contemporary urban life, Bernstein is associated with the Ashcan School.
