Julia was the granddaughter of Sarah Wallace and George Welshman Owens, and the daughter of Elizabeth Gordon Wayne and George Savage Owens, whose portraits can be seen in the Owens-Thomas House. Ceramics painting was an artistic endeavour considered an appropriate activity for women in late-Victorian society. For some, it was a pleasant diversion; for others, a serious art form. Ceramics painting could also provide a respectable means of earning an income.
