The introduction of kerosene in the middle of the century resulted in a rapid transformation of early lighting devices and drove manufacturers like the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company (1826–1888) to mass produce a spectrum of elaborate and colored tableware, vases, and lamps such as this one. Due to the larger scale of this lamp, it may have been used on the floor near a piano or as a banqueting lamp on a table in a parlor or library.
