Painters appreciated the region’s picturesque landscape and quaint farmhouses, and Bellows showed particular interest in dilapidated barns and other rustic structures. These presented a sharp contrast to his well-known depictions of working-class life in the metropolis. Bellows painted at least two views of this forlorn site, where leafless trees and grave-like pits suggest the changing character of the countryside, migration to cities, and a tension between rural and urban America.
