With the use of abstract lines, shapes, and natural forms, Rodríguez builds a loose visual framework, which she later uses to develop her paintings. This work, the first of Rodríguez’s 2005 large-scale drawing series, reveals a conversational dichotomy between the soft, ornamental, floral image on the left and the static, rigid, composition on the right. Made of four sheets of paper, with the artist adding on sheets as she went, the drawing reflects Rodríguez’s artistic process. February 3, 2005 serves as the preliminary drawing for Parallel Words I created by Rodríguez in 2006. The initial lines and shapes first depicted in Rodríguez’s sketch transform into a collection of resolute forms. However, February 3, 2005 stands alone as an artwork in and of itself, as the final painting “in the act of becoming.”
