Hall and his wife Mary completed the meticulous painting on these pieces. Most of the borders include single sprigs of feverfew alongside sprays of a grass-like plant, sometimes accompanied by a moth. This arrangement of single elements resembles plant specimens or pressed flowers pasted in a book. Even the moth, with its spread wings, looks as though it is pinned in place, a common method of displaying insect specimens in cases. These subtle details reveal the widespread influence of natural history conventions on design.
