This courthouse steps variation of the pattern is made of dress goods, in jewel tones, some of which have been cut on the bias to add visual interest to the design. Log Cabin quilts are an unusual exception to the fact that quilts in the 19th c. were not generally referred to by a pattern name. They were wildly popular during the Civil War, and are often found listed as a category for judging at state and local fairs.
