Label Text
In 1975, New York-based C.A.C. Publications approached Alexander Calder to help with fundraising efforts for earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Best known as a monumental sculptor of kinetic mobiles, Calder was a humanitarian who agreed to help by providing preexisting designs that could be translated into tapestries and hammocks by local weavers using traditional materials and techniques. The end products were produced as limited editions of Calder’s dynamic, geometric designs of bright colors braided using natural fibers. Text written for 'Anything Goes: Contemporary Art and Materials' on view October 28, 2022-May 14, 2023.
