However, he also was an active artist from an early age. Many patrons from the Boston area supported his career, including Mary Haskell Minis (1873–1964), who was originally from South Carolina and relocated to Savannah later in life. Gibran’s self-portrait shows a relationship between artist and patron, with Gibran thoughtfully looking at the viewer and Minis’ smiling face hovering over his shoulder. The dreamlike imagery and loose mark-making seen in this painting are common elements in the artist’s work.
