To him, the subway was the great equalizer as it brought people together regardless of class, gender, race, or wealth. He would stay on the train for 8 to 10 hours a day without a destination, looking for the right person, scene, or moment to photograph. He began the project in black and white but later changed to color, which he believed unlocked a “dimension of meaning that demanded a color consciousness.” The use of color optimized the layered planes of the subway, the shine of the metallic poles in the dark, and the press of bodies against the graffiti-stained walls, as Davidson illuminated a transitory space that most riders chose or attempted to ignore.
