Long Lines is the interstate and international operating unit of A.T.&T. A.T.&T. is actually made up of twenty-three Bell system-associated companies and Long Lines. The primary concern of Long Lines is the day-to-day management of the vast national resource that is the nationwide telecommunications network.
The organization is sustained financially by fees to customers for usage of telecommunications service.
A.T.&T. Long Lines was begun in 1900 as a response to the increase in long-distance telephoning. The chief responsibilities are to develop and operate the long-distance network. In addition to regular long-distance message telephone service, Long Lines provides private line circuits for the transmission of data, television, radio, teletypewriter, and telephoto services.
The Telephone Centennial was celebrated in 1976.
