In this type, the subject’s attention away from the viewer often implies her lack of awareness of being watched, fitting fantasies about women’s use of their private spaces. Caro-Delvaille, a French artist who studied in Bayonne and Paris, filled the background with colorful, patterned textiles and frills that frame his subject and emphasize her curves.
