The authority’s main objective is to provide efficient transportation at the lowest possible cost. The New York City Transit Authority provides daily service for 3 ½ million subway riders and 2 ½ million bus riders.
The New York City Transit Authority was started in 1953 as an outgrowth of the Board of Transportation and was reorganized in 1968 under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Special fares are granted to senior citizens, the handicapped, and students, and on Saturday night, Sundays, and holidays to the general public. Other services offered are the Culture Buses, Shopper’s Special, and the Night Coach special buses.
Subways cover 230 miles of track, and there are 460 stations. Buses run over 949 miles on 202 separate routes.
